It<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/14\/scores-drown-refugee-boat-sinks-off-greece\">&nbsp;capsized<\/a>&nbsp;with as many as 750 men, women and children on board at about midnight UK time last Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\" id=\"8e822ce6-da1c-4df5-be34-007ddc2a2a19\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/19\/i-have-come-for-a-sign-of-life-relatives-cling-to-hope-after-greek-shipwreck\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/4ee30a162ca65a7410f56f11ecbd432026c3da8a\/0_233_7000_4200\/master\/7000.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=31459f28b83e17b5a3efad743b1497ac\" alt=\"Relatives and friends of people who were onboard a boat that capsized at open sea off Greece, seek information regarding survivors and missing people, at the entrance of a reception and identification camp in Malakasa, Greece.\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The discovery of the bodies so many days later was described as both \u201cunexpected and encouraging\u201d by Greek maritime officials, who said the operation would go on \u201cfor as long as it takes\u201d. So far, 104 survivors have been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relatives have flocked to Greece desperately seeking&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/17\/greece-shipwreck-survivors-anger-fury-coast-guard-questions\">news<\/a>&nbsp;of loved ones. \u201cIn our culture, in the worst case scenario, all anything a relative ever wants to do is to able to bury a loved one,\u201d said Shahid Nawas, a refugee who presides over Greece\u2019s 30,000-strong Pakistani community. \u201cThere were over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/18\/pakistanis-were-forced-below-deck-on-refugee-boat-in-greece-disaster\">400 Pakistani nationals on that boat<\/a>&nbsp;and only 12 are among those who survived.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities are working on the premise that the hundreds of passengers still missing are dead.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\" id=\"33e13a1b-4d7c-4b74-802e-d2b30eb52e47\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/1c4fec5f8dbbc021a649d209e2bda7fdba87d647\/0_0_1920_1080\/1920.jpg?width=465&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none\" alt=\"Aerial footage shows migrant ship hours before capsize in Mediterranean \u2013 video\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aerial footage shows migrant ship hours before capsize in Mediterranean \u2013 video<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Amid mounting criticism of the way the disaster was handled by Greek authorities \u2013 which were first alerted to the vessel about 15 hours before it capsized \u2013 nine people suspected of being behind the smuggling operation appeared before a prosecutor in Kalamata on Tuesday. The suspects, who are all Egyptian and aged between 20 and 40, according to state-run TV, categorically denied piloting the doomed ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The men, who were detained after questioning by coast guard officials, face charges ranging from involuntary manslaughter to membership of a criminal gang to provoking a shipwreck and endangering human life. The public prosecutor is due to decide whether all nine should be imprisoned pending trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In emotional scenes on Monday, before lawyers requested a 24-hour adjournment of proceedings, relatives who had gathered outside the court shouted the names of loved ones still missing as the accused were taken into the building. Others attempted to show court officials and lawyers pictures of relatives on their mobile phones.<br><br>Greek coast guard officials have rebuffed allegations that they deliberately failed to intervene for fear that such a large group of migrants were being brought ashore. Instead they claim that while a vessel was dispatched to the area, the stricken boat\u2019s crew members repeatedly turned down offers of assistance saying: \u201cNo help \u2026 [we] go Italy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\" id=\"c5e80e8e-4fa6-47a6-a656-a7cec84113f1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/19\/greek-coast-boat-sank-tracking-data\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/67643248d0fec1a581fbbec9ccc656af5321532a\/0_31_1600_960\/master\/1600.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=add658d6b22c9165ca9700ad442b3b1d\" alt=\"A photo of the overcrowded boat before it sank\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The country\u2019s civil protection minister, Vangelis Tournas, said last week that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/15\/where-are-they-hope-fades-among-relatives-of-missing-after-greek-shipwreck\">Greek authorities had been unable to take action earlier<\/a>&nbsp;because the trawler was in international waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is a version of events that has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/19\/greek-coast-boat-sank-tracking-data\">contradicted<\/a>&nbsp;by maritime tracking data that has emerged since the tragedy, with legal experts saying that with the vessel clearly in distress, a rescue operation should have been launched much earlier.
