I\u2019m just eight or nine hours away from Europe\u2019,\u201d Naeem told Al Jazeera. \u201cAnd he told me that when he arrived he would contact me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Naeem read the news about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2023\/6\/20\/questions-remain-over-greeces-role-in-migrant-boat-tragedy\">shipwreck off Greece\u2019s Pylos,<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cI felt like my soul was going away\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He spent days trying to find information about his brother\u2019s whereabouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has received no official confirmation, but believes that Hameedullah and his three-year-old son Afaq Ahmed are among hundreds feared dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naeem said Hameedullah left Pakistan with Afaq, hoping of building a safer, more stable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His wife had been killed a year earlier, and he feared for his son\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Pakistan, you have to leave the country for so many reasons. There is no rule of law,\u201d said Naeem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brothers had discussed many options, but felt that a boat to Europe was the only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have read that 385 people from Pakistan died,\u201d said Naeem. \u201cBut it\u2019s not just that 385 people died, it\u2019s 385 families that are completely devastated and hopeless.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Families of those on board recall the heartbreaking farewells they shared as hopes of finding any more survivors vanish.
