{"id":913,"date":"2023-06-21T14:08:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T14:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/captainsupport.net\/?p=913"},"modified":"2024-04-08T10:53:23","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T10:53:23","slug":"hopelessness-why-pakistanis-are-leaving-losing-lives-at-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/captainsupport.net\/freepylos9\/hopelessness-why-pakistanis-are-leaving-losing-lives-at-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Hopelessness\u2019: Why Pakistanis are leaving, losing lives at sea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Authorities in Pakistan say at least 124 Pakistanis were on a boat that sank off Greece with hundreds feared drowned.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/captainsupport.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/2023-06-20T204744Z_1957734904_RC24N1ASKJLJ_RTRMADP_3_EUROPE-MIGRANTS-GREECE-PAKISTAN-1687325805.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-915\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Raja Mohammad Aslam, 55, holds a photo of his son Sajid Aslam, 26, who is missing after last week&#8217;s boat disaster [Gibran Peshimam\/Reuters]<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/author\/abid-hussain\">Abid Hussain<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/6\/21\/hopelessness-why-pakistanis-are-leaving-losing-lives-at-sea\">*First Published on Al Jazeera<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Faje.io%2Fz8dr62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=%E2%80%98Hopelessness%E2%80%99%3A%20Why%20Pakistanis%20are%20leaving%2C%20losing%20lives%20at%20sea&amp;source=sharethiscom&amp;related=sharethis&amp;via=AJEnglish&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Faje.io%2Fz8dr62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/6\/21\/https:\/\/aje.io\/z8dr62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Islamabad, Pakistan \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;Two of Abid Kashmiri\u2019s family members were on board the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2023\/6\/20\/questions-remain-over-greeces-role-in-migrant-boat-tragedy\">refugee-filled vessel<\/a>&nbsp;that capsized off the coast of Greece last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cousin, Imran Nazir, and nephew, Abdul Islam, travelled from Kotli district in Pakistan-administered Kashmir to Libya in March after securing valid visas for the war-torn country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Libya was not to be the pair\u2019s last stop, said Kashmiri, adding that his family knew their real destination: Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many people from our village who have managed to leave for European countries where they are now settled, allowing their families here in Pakistan to live well,\u201d Kashmiri, an electrician, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family members had paid 2.2 million Pakistani rupees ($7,655) for each of the travellers to \u201cagents\u201d who provide documentation for people looking to find financial opportunities abroad, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth Nazir and Islam were unmarried and they, too, wanted to find their way to Europe,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are now considered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/6\/19\/day-of-mourning-in-pakistan-as-hundreds-die-in-greece-boat-mishap\">among the hundreds missing<\/a>&nbsp;from the Greek boat tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) have said that between 400 and 750 people were believed to have been on board the boat that capsized on June 14 in the Ionian Sea some 47 nautical miles (87km) off the Greek town of Pylos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, only 104 survivors have been found alive. None of the women or children who were allegedly kept in the hold of the boat have been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018He was a good kid and a good student\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data compiled by Pakistan\u2019s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), at least 124 people from Pakistan have been identified so far as being on board the boat. Only 12 of them reportedly survived. Media reports, however, put the number of Pakistanis on the boat to be around 300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tragedy off Greece was the third major incident recorded since February in which migrants and refugees from Pakistan lost their lives at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, more than 20 Pakistanis were among 60 who died when a boat capsized near the southern Italian region of Calabria. Two months later, Pakistanis were among the 57 bodies that washed ashore in Libya after two boats carrying refugees capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anis Majeed, a 24-year-old law student from the Kotli district, said that his cousin Awais Asif was also one of the people on board the boat that sank last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy cousin had left the country five months ago and when he was departing, hundreds of people came to bid him farewell,\u201d Majeed told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Majeed, the 21-year-old Asif made the dangerous journey because of his family\u2019s poor financial situation and his father\u2019s deteriorating health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was a good kid and a good student. But he decided to take this journey for greener pastures and a better financial future for himself and his family,\u201d Majeed said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are so many people in our area who have managed to change their life by travelling to Europe, my cousin thought he could do the same, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_2243879\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AP23165601257788-1686986380.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Survivors of a shipwreck rest in a warehouse at the port in Kalamata town\" class=\"wp-image-2243879\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Survivors of the boat tragedy rest in a warehouse at the port in Kalamata town, about 240km (150 miles) southwest of Athens, on June 14, 2023 [File: Thanassis Stavrakis\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Crime of consent\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rana Abdul Jabbar, a senior official with the FIA, said that 90 percent of the people they have identified as being on board the boat that capsized had travelled legally to Libya first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccording to our records, a vast majority among these people got either a work permit or a travel visa to Libya, and they flew there from Karachi via Dubai, for which they paid money to agents who facilitated their paperwork,\u201d he said, adding that authorities had apprehended 26 alleged human traffickers involved in smuggling people on board the capsized boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the FIA prevented 19,000 people from leaving Pakistan through land or air routes, Jabbar said, while 10,000 people have been intercepted so far this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said more than 34,000 people from Pakistan were deported from various European countries in 2022 for staying without documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, he said, most of the Pakistani people trying to reach Europe used to take land routes, which involved travelling through Iran, Turkey and Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince many of these countries, including Pakistan, have deployed stricter border control policies, migrants have now switched to taking [the] sea route, where they attempt to reach Libya and then onwards via boats,\u201d Jabbar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A difficulty in attempting to stop people from undertaking such a dangerous journey is that it is a \u201ccrime of consent\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTraffickers have deployed this new tactic where they get legitimate documentation for those wishing to travel,\u201d he explained. \u201cHow do you stop somebody who has a valid passport and visa? It then becomes a legal issue of stopping somebody\u2019s right of movement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hopelessness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kashmiri, who lost his cousin and nephew, said that although the tragedy has saddened him, he still understands why his family members risked their lives trying to migrate to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is the hopelessness of this place which drives them to leave,\u201d the 34-year-old said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan is mired in an unprecedented economic crisis, with backbreaking inflation making food a luxury for millions of people. With high unemployment and no end in sight to the economic woes, Pakistanis have no choice but to head abroad for a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a person decides to take this step, despite knowing all the risks involved, imagine yourself what motivates them to take this dangerous journey,\u201d Kashmiri said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou must be incredibly brave to even think of doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authorities in Pakistan say at least 124 Pakistanis were on a boat that sank off Greece with hundreds feared drowned.
