Campaign Report On Funds Spent

On 21 May 2024, the Criminal Court of Kalamata acquitted the nine defendants who had been arbitrarily accused of smuggling and illegal entry, and causing the deadly Pylos shipwreck, in which over 600 people were killed.

The #FreePylos9 campaign celebrates this important decision and would like to thank everyone who supported to make this success possible. One of the goals of the campaign was to raise money to directly support the nine defendants in detention and to cover legal costs.

Thanks to your support, we raised a total of €19.000, which were spent as follows (rough amounts indicated below):

        – €3000 on direct support of the Pylos 9 defendants;

        – €450 on witnesses’ travel expenses for the trial;

        – €750 on interpretation fees;

        – €800 on fees related to notarized and certified witness statements;

        – €12,000 on court fees.

        -€120 on Campaign costs

These costs were covered by little more than 1/2 through private donations made directly to the campaign, by roughly 1/4 through contribution from Medico International Germany and by little less than 1/4 through contribution from #LeaveNoOneBehind also organised a fundraiser in support of the campaign.

The #FreePylos9 Campaign has still around €2000 left in donations which will be directed for the application of the Pylos 9 to obtain compensation for their arbitrary detention.

The struggle continues to hold the real culprits of this crime accountable.
